Donald Trump supporters planning to disguise themselves as anti-Trump protesters at Phoenix rally
Donald Trump’s decision to hold a rally for his base in Arizona on Tuesday, just a week after his own white supremacist supporters carried out a deadly terrorist attack on U.S. soil, is an overt middle finger to the American mainstream. It’s also an overt threat to safety of everyone in the area. And now comes word that Trump’s supporters are planning to attend the rally disguised as protesters in order to cause trouble.
This isn’t merely an accusation coming from the other side. Instead it’s coming from one of Trump’s own most vocal online supporters, Mike Cernovich. Here’s what he tweeted: “I’m told some Trump supporters will be wearing ANTIFA attire and going undercover during Trump Phoenix rally” (link). It’s unclear why he’s chosen to share this information publicly. Perhaps he genuinely has problems with the idea. Or perhaps he’s merely forgotten that his tweets can be seen by everyone outside of Trump’s base. But it sets off a number of red flags.
There are two major concerns about Trump’s Phoenix rally. The first, and most immediate, is that his white supremacist supporters will take his praise of them last week as a sign that they should push their violence even further. The secondary concern is that Trump’s goons might try to provoke violence during the rally so they can then turn around and blame that violence on the protesters. This would give Trump more fuel for his phony argument that the violence is coming from “many sides.”
And now we’ve got one of Donald Trump’s own mouthpieces admitting that he’s been told some Trump supporters are planning to do precisely that. This is something important to keep in mind, if and when things inevitably go wrong one way or another at the Phoenix rally, in making sure blame gets assigned accurately.
