Donald Trump’s lawyers unwittingly admit to his financial crimes by talking about statute of limitations

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

It looks like Donald Trump’s historically inept legal team has stepped in it yet again. One of Trump’s attorneys tried to make the legal argument that Special Counsel Robert Mueller shouldn’t be investigating Trump’s financial crimes because the statute of limitations has expired by now anyway. But in so doing, the attorney essentially admitted that Trump is guilty of financial crimes – thereby validating Mueller’s decision to investigate Trump’s finances.

It was Rachel Maddow of MSNBC who flagged a quote from Trump attorney John Dowd which was buried deep in an article from Bloomberg: “‘Most importantly,’ Dowd says, the transactions ‘are well beyond any statute of limitation imposed by the United States Code.'” (link). Maddow’s producer reached out to Dowd for further comment, asking him if this was indeed an admission that Trump has committed financial crimes. Maddow reported on-air on Friday evening that Dowd replied by saying that he’ll never speak to Maddow’s producer again.

So now we know that Donald Trump’s attorney John Dowd is a five year old. But more importantly, it points to Dowd having realized that he screwed up when he pointed to the statute of limitations. Innocent people and their attorneys don’t need to invoke that kind of legal defense, because their position is supposed to be that they didn’t commit the crimes to begin with. So Trump’s attorney just publicly admitted that he’s guilty.

This comes after Trump’s other attorney Marc Kasowitz was caught making inappropriate threats against someone who had emailed him, and Trump’s other attorney Jay Sekulow tried to blame the Russia scandal on the Secret Service. Of course Trump’s original attorney Michael Cohen is so knee deep in the Russia scandal that he’s now hired an attorney of his own. But John Dowd may have just taken the prize by admitting that Trump is guilty of the past financial crimes that Robert Mueller is investigating.
