Donald Trump abruptly delays his long awaited return to visit New York City and Trump Tower
Since taking office, Donald Trump has spent as much as one-third of his time at his various properties around the nation. But he’s made a point of avoiding his hometown of New York City and his primary residence of Trump Tower. A week ago he announced that he would finally be heading there this week, and the city made preparations for his arrival today. But instead Trump has put off his return to New York City and has instead headed to Washington DC.
This has led to confusion as to what’s really going on behind the scenes. On August 7th, Trump tweeted “Working hard from New Jersey while White House goes through long planned renovation. Going to New York next week for more meetings.” His arrival was supposed to happen today, and in fact the city began closing the streets around Trump Tower, according to tracking sites Curbed (link) and DNAinfo (link). But this morning Trump tweeted “Heading to Washington this morning. Much work to do.”
For all we know, Trump may turn up at Trump Tower before the day is over, as the flight times between New Jersey, Washington DC and New York City are fairly short. But this will only serve to add fuel for those who have spent the past six months asking why he’s steadfastly avoided Trump Tower. Even the one time he traveled into New York City for an event, he spent the night at his New Jersey resort instead. Was Trump avoiding his wife during the time she was living at Trump Tower? Did he truly believe it when he made the paranoid claim that President Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower?
In any case, we’ll see if Donald Trump he actually ends up surfacing in New York City later today. If so, he’ll face some of the fiercest protests to date, in the wake of his refusal to condemn the Nazis and white supremacists who carried out a deadly terrorist attack in Charlottesville over the weekend. But for now it appears that he’s so eager to avoid his home of Trump Tower, he’s even willing to spend time in the White House, which he also hates.
