Donald Trump went thirteen days without bothering to call the families of the four U.S. soldiers who were killed in Niger – and he only grudgingly made those calls yesterday after the media publicly humiliated him over it. Trump then promptly made an offensive remark to the pregnant widow of one of the fallen soldiers. Then he lied about it. Now the family in question is calling out Trump for his lie.

Trump offensively told the widow that her late husband “He knew what he signed up for” when he joined the military, according to local Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who was with the widow at the time of the call, which was placed on speakerphone (link). This prompted Trump to angrily tweet “Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!” Trump has failed to offer any such proof. This was just the beginning of the mess.

Now the mother of the fallen soldier in question is confirming that she also heard the phone call on speakerphone, and she’s confirming that Trump really did make the offensive remark to the widow, saying “President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband” according to the Washington Post (link). MSNBC is also reporting that the mother said Trump was “cavalier” during his phone call.

This means that Donald Trump is now in the position of having to either admit he said something offensive to the widow, or accuse her family of lying about it, or sit back and say nothing as the scandal explodes in the media. Trump can’t win no matter how he tries to play this – and the prevailing narrative will be that he disrespected the pregnant widow of a fallen U.S. soldier.
