Sean Spicer’s briefing room nemesis April Ryan sticks up for him against Donald Trump

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Some might argue that Sean Spicer’s worst enemy in the White House Briefing Room has been his own mouth. But in reality it’s been veteran political reporter April Ryan, who recently gained a newfound level of popularity by calmly standing her ground while Spicer insultingly told her to stop shaking her head. But now Ryan is coming to Spicer’s defense in an incident involving Spicer and Donald Trump.

Sean Spicer was one of several White House staffers who traveled with Donald Trump on his overseas trip. When Trump met with Pope Francis, he took a number of staffers into the meeting with him, but made a point of excluding Spicer, a devout Catholic. When leaked of the snub, even some of Spicer’s biggest detractors found themselves feeling bad for him in light of what Trump had done to him.

Spicer’s defenders included April Ryan. When she appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she took Spicer’s side, stating that “Even though he did what he did to me, he didn’t get the chance to see the Pope.” Of course also let slip that “It looks like he may not be there when we come back,” essentially revealing the worst kept secret in politics, which is that Spicer’s job as Press Secretary is in imminent jeopardy.

But still, April Ryan is not going easy on Sean Spicer in the Briefing Room just because she feels bad that Trump cruelly kept him from getting to meet the Pope. Someone tweeted Ryan asking her “can u ask Sean Spicer, if he continues to refuse to answer questions for the American people, isn’t that an injustice to us?” (link). Ryan responded by retweeting the question in apparent agreement. Meanwhile, Ryan’s career continues to prosper, as CNN recently added her as an on-air political analyst.
