Man gets fired after sexist Twitter post about Chelsea Clinton

Who is Brian Smith? He was a PR Director of an unspecified company, until earlier today when he used Twitter to post a joke which represented a sexist attack on Chelsea Clinton, calling her a “dog.” Chelsea saw the tweet and replied, cheerfully blowing off the joke. But just a few hours later, Smith came back to Twitter to announce that he’d been fired from his job.

It all started with this offensive tweet:

Chelsea Clinton then posted the following reply:

The First Amendment protects everyone’s right to free speech without reprisal from the government, but it doesn’t say anything about reprisal from your boss. Sure enough, just five hours later, Smith revealed that he was out of a job:

Shortly thereafter, he deleted his original offensive tweet and posted the following apology, pinned to the top of his Twitter account:

The lesson here: if you’re a Public Relations Director for a company, it’s probably best not to publicly make jokes in which you refer to women as dogs.
