Robert Mueller’s holiday surprise
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has had more than three weeks with the crucial information Michael Flynn gave him about Donald Trump and the uppermost rungs of his inner circle. Mueller has put a few things out there this week which hint at just how much else he’s got up his sleeve. And, as one of his former colleagues once famously said about him, Mueller loves surprises. There’s no better time to catch people off guard than during the holidays.
You know it’s coming. The question is what’s coming. He appears to be sitting on a powder keg of evidence about Jared Kushner. But when you’re going after the son-in-law of a sitting president, you’d better have all your ducks in a row, because you only get one shot to get it right. There are those pessimists among the Resistance who believe that Mueller never will arrest Kushner, or that Kushner will never cut a deal. But these are the same people who told us that Mueller would never get as far as arresting Paul Manafort, or getting Flynn to cut a deal. So let’s focus on what logically comes next.
Mueller’s best move by far, if he can pull it off, is to convince Kushner to cut a deal against Donald Trump. While there are plenty among the Resistance who would love to see Kushner hauled away in handcuffs, his hostile arrest would be a sign that he’s not willing to cooperate. In the end, while Mueller does want to make sure justice is served across the board, his only true goal is to get to the truth about what all Donald Trump did. If that means giving a sweetheart deal to anyone under Trump who is willing to give him up, then so be it. As much as people wanted to see Flynn locked up for life, his lenient deal gets Mueller a lot closer to taking Trump down.
So we’re more or less waiting right now to see what Robert Mueller does with regard to Jared Kushner, if he really is the next target up the chain, or whoever else that target might be. If Mueller thinks his next target is close to cutting a deal, he’ll give that person the holidays with family first – then the deal will suddenly be announced out of nowhere. If Mueller concludes that his next target is not going to cooperate, then we’re going to see a surprise arrest, and he’s probably going do it at the least convenient time possible. In other words, keep your eyes open.
