Helen Mirren takes down Ivanka Trump

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Actress Helen Mirren is widely seen as being a thought leader and a feminist icon. Ivanka Trump is widely seen as being neither. And now Mirren, who has never been one to hold back, is ripping into Ivanka in rather striking fashion. In so doing, she’s also touching on some of the complaints I’ve filed about Ivanka in recent days.

Here’s what Helen Mirren has to say about Ivanka Trump in a new interview with Allure Magazine: “[Ivanka] talks a good game, but there’s no substance. Her book is so ignorant about how the majority of women live, talking about ‘Make time for yourself to have a massage.’ Puh-lease.” (link). This reminds me of what I recently had to say about Ivanka’s all-talk and no-action approach toward her father.

Here’s what I wrote over the weekend: “Yet Ivanka does nothing. We all know that she’s the only one with real influence over her father. She could stop all of this if she chose to. If she wanted to help him succeed, she could be running his White House. And if she wanted this to be over with, she could find a way to convince him to resign. But she’s done neither. Instead she spends all her time on vacation, acting as if the destruction of her country and the self-destruction of her father aren’t happening.” (link). I think Helen said it more succinctly.

It’s notable that while I’ve never had any hope that Melania Trump might do the right thing with regard to her husband, Helen Mirren sees it somewhat differently: She told Allure, “You look at old Mel there, and she is one of the most powerful women in the world because she could take him down. She almost did that with the hand.” So let’s all hope that Helen’s optimism plays out in that regard.
