Get ready for “daily, sometimes hourly leaks” in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal
Even with Congress having been out of session of late, there has been quite a bit of news leaking out about Donald Trump’s Russia scandal and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into it (Mueller doesn’t go on recess). With Congress nearing a return to session, the list of high profile witnesses is about to reach a dizzying pace. Moreover, the leaks about the scandal are about to become just as dizzying. But don’t take our word for it.
In the next few weeks alone everyone from Donald Trump Jr to Michael Cohen to Felix Sater will likely be testifying in front of various committees. Each of these people was directly involved in one plank of the Trump-Russia collusion efforts or another, meaning we’ve now moved past the phase where expert or friendly witnesses were testifying, and we’re now full-on into the phase where the targets themselves are being compelled to testify. More important, however, are the tidal wave of leaks that inevitably surface when this many people (witnesses, congressmen, attorneys, reporters in the halls of Congress) suddenly become privy to information.
In fact Politico – which tends to choose its words carefully – is flat out saying that there will be “daily, sometimes hourly, leaks” forthcoming in the scandal (link). For Donald Trump, who has been routinely doubling down on a failed gambit to obstruct the investigation from making progress, these headlines are his worst nightmare. No wait, make that his second-worst nightmare.
It also looks like Paul Manafort will be testifying yet again, after having already unsatisfactorily testified once, only to have his home raided by the FBI the next morning. Perhaps he’ll be just a little bit more forthcoming this time. Keep in mind that these congressional hearings on Trump-Russia aren’t merely superfluous. By all accounts, the committees are working with Mueller’s probe hand in hand. Trump’s real worst nightmare is that one of these many targets is likely to crack under pressure and flip on him.
