One day after he was universally criticized for launching a vicious and vulgar personal attack on “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski via his Twitter account, Donald Trump decided to go back to the well again today. But this time his attack on Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough took an even more surreal direction. In an early morning tweet, Trump appeared to have admitted to having committed felony blackmail against the two.

This morning Donald Trump tweeted “Watched low rated Morning Joe for first time in long time. FAKE NEWS. He called me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no! Bad show” (link). The Enquirer story in question is likely that Joe and Mika were dating before they publicly came out as a couple earlier this year. Trump is close friends with the publisher of the National Enquirer, and Trump and Scarborough used to get along well, so Trump’s claim here is possible. But here’s the problem: Trump has mentioned this matter before, and last time he framed it as a threat.

Here’s what Trump tweeted during the election, back in August of 2016:

So the real story is that nearly a year ago, Donald Trump publicly threatened to release a personal secret about Morning Joe and Mika in an attempt at getting them to give him more preferable election coverage so he could win. And now, with his tweet today, Trump appears to be confessing to the specifics of that blackmail attempt. In the sense that Trump may have just opened himself (and the Enquirer) up to a felony blackmail investigation, his tweet about Morning Joe today could end up damaging himself even more than his vulgar tweet about the show yesterday. The Democrats on the appropriate Congressional committees are likely already attempting to determine whether Trump did indeed confess to a crime this morning, so it can be investigated.
