Donald Trump timidly disrespects Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico to her face
Even as San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz spent the weekend appearing on national television begging Donald Trump to get his act together with relief supplies for Puerto Rico, Trump spent the weekend hurling vicious insults at her on Twitter, calling her “nasty.” On Monday, Trump finally visited Puerto Rico, where he and Yulín Cruz met face to face. To say that it went poorly would be a vast understatement.
Network TV news video footage of the exchange shows Trump walking up to Yulín Cruz and saying “How are you?” as they shake hands. She begins saying what sounds like “It’s all about saving lives, it’s not about politics…” as he makes a point of looking away from her. He then walks away without saying a word while she’s still talking. This demonstrates a few disturbing and revealing things, and raises some even more disturbing questions.
For starters, it’s clear that Trump is unwilling or unable to set aside personal feelings for the sake of working together to save lives. President Barack Obama and Governor Chris Christie didn’t want to be working together after Hurricane Sandy, but they briefly did it anyway, because it was an emergency. Trump clearly doesn’t understand that concept, and therefore isn’t fit for any office. It was also telling that, after having spent the weekend brazenly attacking Yulín Cruz from afar, he didn’t even attempt it to her face – as is common for cyberbullies. There’s another key question. If Donald Trump had no intention of speaking with Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, why did he walk up to her and shake hands with her in the first place? It raises the question of whether he even recognized her. Is it possible that by the time Trump headed to Puerto Rico, he still somehow didn’t know what she looked like? Or are his cognitive abilities too far gone to remember? In any case, a distressing number of major news outlets have falsely reported that Trump and Yulín Cruz “patched things up” or were cordial to each other, when the footage shows that’s clearly not what happened. Instead, he snubbed her.
