Just how rattled are the Republicans after last night’s Senate loss in Alabama? The GOP infighting is already spilling over into public view. In fact, even the white supremacist wing of the Republican Party is now turning against itself. Peter King, arguably the most openly racist member of Congress, is now publicly attacking white supremacist patron saint Steve Bannon in vicious fashion.

King appeared on MSNBC today and ripped into Bannon for having pushed Roy Moore to be the Republican nominee in the Alabama race: “I don’t know who can identify with him, and to see him on the stage this week with a big American flag behind him, he looked like a disheveled drunk that wandered onto the national stage.” King and the GOP leadership had been trying to steer their preferred candidate, Luther Strange, to the nomination. It’s unclear if Strange would have won or lost last night, as voters continue to punish the Republican Party for its refusal to oust Donald Trump, but it is clear that Trump’s continued presence is continuing to rip the party apart.

In any case, the Republican Congress is now publicly blaming Steve Bannon for its woes, because it can’t yet afford to begin publicly blaming the larger culprit, Donald Trump. The GOP desperately wants to pass its tax scam bill for the wealthy before Trump finishes imploding, and is thus hesitant to say or do anything to finish him off beforehand.

Once the backlash against Donald Trump reaches critical mass to the point that the media and the public become focused on his ouster, the Republican Congress won’t be able to find sufficient footing to pass any additional partisan legislation until Trump’s demise is complete. So for now, the GOP is kicking Steve Bannon around, when they’d rather be kicking Trump instead.
