Just how jarring was Donald Trump’s speech in Phoenix on Tuesday evening? It was alarming enough that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who’s worked for several Presidents of both parties, went on CNN and called it the most “disturbing” thing he’s ever seen, while asking how much longer the nation will have to “endure this nightmare.” But that was polite compared to the manner in which two of CNN’s Republican commentators condemned Trump’s speech.

Republican strategist Rick Wilson has long been no fan of Donald Trump. But while appearing on a CNN panel after Trump’s speech on Tuesday night, Wilson flat out accused Trump of being “mentally ill.” Wilson also stated on Twitter that Trump is “insane.” But then another CNN commentator Ana Navarro, tweeted that “Only possible defensible explanation for Trump’s disgusting, unpresidential, narcissistic behavior, would be early-on-set dementia. Maybe.” (link). Other CNN personalities weren’t much kinder. Don Lemon repeatedly accused Trump of lying, while taking great pains to document each of his lies.

Meanwhile over on MSNBC, host Lawrence O’Donnell fact checked and debunked portions of Trump’s speech in real time as he weaved in and out of Trump’s inane rambling. And of course this came just hours after the New York Times revealed that Trump had a screaming an cursing phone call with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in which Trump appeared to commit obstruction of justice over Russia.

And so even as certain segments of the mainstream media predictably heaped praise on Donald Trump last night for a bumbling Afghanistan speech simply because he didn’t kick over his podium and throw paint at anyone, it appears the media is now right back to calling out Trump for his antics. And some commentators – even from his own party – are taking things even further by flat out accusing Trump of being mentally incompetent.
