Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has the perfect response to Donald Trump’s attack on Puerto Rico
As the sheer ineptness of his response to post-hurricane Puerto Rico becomes more clear to the American people, he’s resorted to viciously attacking the leader of one of the American cities that’s been affected. Trump went completely off the deep end with a series of Twitter attacks on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who has begun begging for federal help because her people are dying. It turns out the mayor had the perfect response to Trump’s attacks.
Trump stooped to a stunning level, even by his standards, this morning when he tweeted this: “The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump. Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.”
Trump’s attack was sexist against the mayor, it was racist against the people of Puerto Rico, and it was stunning attack on three and a half million United States citizens. But Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz wasn’t about to take the bait. Moments later she tweeted “The goal is one: saving lives. This is the time to show our “true colors”. We cannot be distracted by anything else.” She also included a few photographs that made her true feelings clear.
In one of the photos, Yulín Cruz is seen wading through waist deep sewage in the street, while holding a bullhorn and coordinating the local rescue effort. In another photo, she’s handing out emergency supplies to her people, after Trump didn’t bother to send anyone to distribute them. In yet another photo she’s working with someone from the New York City Urban Search And Rescue Task Force, a reminder that the state of New York sent more help than Donald Trump’s federal government did.
