Donald Trump strangely tried to sell people on “Big Luther.” It didn’t go well.
Donald Trump has a problem when it comes to endorsing Republican candidates in elections: they lose more often than the political demographics say they should. Trump also has another problem: his endorsements tend to be so awkward and clunky that they often go over more like punchlines than serious messages of support. That brings us to Trump’s strange “Big Luther” moment – which didn’t go over well.
Trump was attempting to endorse sitting Alabama Senator and current Republican primary candidate Luther Strange. The special election in question is only taking place because Strange’s recent appointment to the seat was part of a criminal scandal. So now he’s faced with the task of running for reelection just months after having taken office. He’s running against a fellow Republican, Roy Moore, who is just as deplorable. But it’s Strange who has Trump’s support in the primary – not that it’s helping him much.
Trump tweeted “I will be in Huntsville, Alabama, on Saturday night to support Luther Strange for Senate. ‘Big Luther’ is a great guy who gets things done!” The trouble: while Big Luther is in fact Luther Strange’s nickname (he’s really tall), it was taken as more of a punchline by those who responded to the tweet. For instance, Pe Resists replied “You endorsed the guy who was appointed by a now-indicted governor into the seat held by a person now under criminal investigation. Swampy.” It got uglier from there.
Dave Weasel tweeted “Big Luther endorsed by little hands!” Sarah Smith touched on the scandalous nature of Trump’s endorsement: “Taxpayers are paying a fortune for the use of Air Force One on the campaign trail by President Trump and Luther Strange. A total disgrace!” Sabreen60 pointed to Trump’s ugly reality: “Yo Donnie, ur supporters are burning MAGA caps. Actually they’re burning their own money. But then you said you like the uneducated.”
