Senate Intel Committee wants to meet with author of Trump-Russia dossier at his hiding place
The now infamous Trump-Russia Dossier, first leaked to the public six weeks ago and containing accusations of the Donald Trump campaign colluding with Russia, along with Russia blackmailing Trump, is about to come front and center once again. Its author, former MI6 agent Christopher Steele, has gone into hiding. But now Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee are vowing to meet with him in the UK or wherever it is he’s located.
The thirty-five page dossier in question was chock full of details and accusations which were initially unverifiable. But now that U.S. intelligence has gone on to confirm the dates and participants of several of the supposed meetings listed in the dossier between Donald Trump campaign advisers and Russian operatives, the report has gained much more credence. Other details, such as the assertion that Vladimir Putin is holding a “pee pee tape” of Trump interacting with Russian prostitutes, remain unproven as far as anyone publicly knows. But now the Senators want to know more. And they’re not the only ones in the U.S. government who have sought Steele’s counsel.
Weeks before election day the FBI had offered to hire Christopher Steele to continue doing his Trump-Russia research, but the Washington Post says the plan fell apart when word of the dossier’s existence went public in October. After the dossier itself leaked in January, Steele went into hiding for his safety.
At this point Steele appears to be unwilling to come out of hiding and travel to the United States to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, presumably out of fear that the Trump administration or Russian operatives in the U.S. would be able to get to him. That’s why several Democrats and a few Republicans on the committee are seeking to set up a meeting with him, reports the Independent, at a location of his choice.
