Donald Trump’s White House suffers yet another high profile resignation as Trump-Russia scandal explodes
The Donald Trump administration is already the most unstable on record, with high profile people resigning and being fired from his White House at a consistently dizzying pace since he took office. Most of these people have exited as they were being swallowed up by controversy or scandal. Now yet another high profile senior adviser is bailing on Trump’s White House – but there’s something new about it this time around.
Trump’s Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell is resigning her job, according to a New York Times report (link). Powell is not known to be caught up in the Trump-Russia scandal or any other scandal, but that’s essentially the point. Trump’s hold on the presidency has grown so tenuous that some of his key people are bailing on him because they think it’ll all be over soon anyway. Moreover, Powell’s resignation strongly hints at two other much more high profile departures.
Regardless of what qualifications she did or did not have, Dina Powell had her job for one reason only: she’s friends with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Over the past two weeks, major media outlets have collectively reported that Donald Trump has been trying to convince Ivanka and Jared to resign and move back to New York City, and that Jared’s role in the White House has all but vanished anyway. Jared then got Trump to announce that the U.S. Embassy in Israel is moving to Jerusalem, which comes across like Jared’s last hurrah.
So even as Dina Powell exits the White House, it’s yet another sign that Jared and Ivanka are ready to exit next; Powell wouldn’t have sufficient allies remaining if they leave. It’s also a reminder that at this point Trump’s own people are looking to get out of town before the walls cave in on the entire administration. Look for more resignations of this type coming soon.
