Washington DC subway cards for Inauguration Day omit Donald Trump
One of the longstanding Washington DC traditions for Inauguration Day is to issue commemorative single-day metro subway fare cards depicting the face of the incoming new President. But with the widely despised Donald Trump having been named the winner of an election he lost by three million votes even after Russia tried to rig it for him, his face is curiously missing from the newly unveiled Inauguration Day subway cards for January 20th 2017. And as it turns out, it’s his own fault.
Although the residents of Washington DC voted heavily against Donald Trump and he’s set to be the least popular individual to ever take the presidential oath of office, it turns out DC didn’t attempt to snub him with the subway cards. As per tradition, before the election, metro officials asked both major candidates to submit images which could be used for mass production of the cards, which is done in advance. But Donald Trump’s team simply never bothered to respond to the request, according to The Washingtonian.
Was the Trump team truly not expecting to be named the winner, and therefore didn’t bother? Was the team too incompetent to take care of these kinds of traditional details on time? In any case, DC officials are now working with Donald Trump to create a sleeve with Trump’s face on it, in case anyone wants one.
But regardless of how it happened, the face-less Inauguration Day commemorative subway cards aimed at celebrating the next President seem oddly fitting. Trump is set to become the most unpopular person to ever be inaugurated, and he’s widely considered to be an illegitimate “president.” Intentional or not, the DC subway cards create the appearance that the United States is about to have no President for four years, which is how many Americans now feel.
