Donald Trump brags about Republican “unity” and then his party promptly implodes on him

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

As a general rule, if you have to publicly insist that your group is unified, it means it’s not. If you have to make that public insistence in all capital letters, it means your party is in complete disarray. So when Donald Trump tweeted “Do not underestimate the UNITY within the Republican Party!” this morning, it was a sign of just how badly things were going to fall apart for the GOP as the day went on – and that’s precisely what happened.

Republican Senator Bob Corker used half of the day causing trouble for Donald Trump over Russian sanctions (link), and the other half of the day causing trouble for Trump’s proposed tax giveaway for the wealthy (link). Corker has moved on from verbally condemning Trump, to now trying to sabotage his entire agenda. He wasn’t the only prominent GOP member to purposely or unintentionally cause Trump trouble.

As Palmer Report documented earlier, Republican Senator Marco Rubio opened his mouth and stupidly blew up Trump’s attempt at fending off the Trump-Russia dossier (link). Meanwhile the GOP is still feeling the sting of Republican Senator Jeff Flake’s decision to slam Trump as unfit, even as John McCain and former President George W. Bush have taken a series of devastating shots at Trump. It gets even more catastrophic.

This week the remaining Trump-loyal Republicans in Congress embarked on a desperate attempt at propping him up just a bit longer so they can try to ram through a bit of legislation before he completely collapses. But even those in the GOP trying to help Trump are struggling to coherently get their message across. The best they could come up with is a several year old non-scandal involving Hillary Clinton, President Obama, Russia, and uranium. It’s fake news, and unlike uranium itself, it’ll have a very short half life before the public is right back to focusing solely on Trump-Russia.
