Donald Trump’s “reimbursement/other” remark confirms he’s failing on every level

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump, historically unpopular and lacking any accomplishments and embroiled in scandal and losing the support of his own party, is failing on every level. But in case anyone needed a reminder of just how thoroughly inept he’s been since taking office, Trump provided that much by simply opening his mouth today.

Trump spent the entire campaign promising that he would build a wall on the Mexican border and that Mexico would pay for it. This was an absurd statement on several levels. Mexican immigrants aren’t causing the crime and problems that he was claiming. Even if they were, building a wall wouldn’t stop them from entering the country. And there was never any way that Mexico was going to pay for the wall, nor would Trump ever be able to find the leverage to force it to happen. Sure enough, Trump is now demanding that Congress pay for the wall with U.S. taxpayer money, and he’s threatening to shut down to government because Congress won’t pay for his wall that he promised Mexico would pay for. But then came today.

At a time when Trump was supposed to be overseeing the federal response today to Hurricane Harvey and the resulting deadly flooding, he was instead tweeting this: “With Mexico being one of the highest crime Nations in the world, we must have THE WALL. Mexico will pay for it through reimbursement/other.” Wait a minute, what the hell is “reimbursement/other” supposed to mean?

By asking Congress to pay for his border wall, Donald Trump has admitted that he’s too weak and inept and clueless to figure out how to get Mexico to pay for it. He’s also revealed that he was lying all along when he said that he knew how to get Mexico to pay for it. Now he’s reduced to using phrases like “reimbursement/other” as a way of trying and failing to keep alive the illusion that he’ll someday be able to get Mexico to magically pay us for something that it never agreed to in the first place.
