Donald Trump continues with desperate distractions, appoints extremist loon as U.S. religious ambassador
Donald Trump is desperate to distract America’s attention from… something. He’s spent the day outraging the American mainstream with one extremist stunt after another, beginning this morning when he announced out of nowhere that he’ll try to ban transgender people from the military. Now this evening Trump has appointed one of the most extremist loons in all of politics to the rather strange position of U.S. religious ambassador.
Trump has announced failed outgoing Kansas Governor Sam Brownback as the nation’s new “ambassador at large for international religious freedom” according to the Associated Press (link). That’s led to widespread confusion among the public as to what that role is supposed to be, or if it’s even a legitimate ambassadorship. But his choice of Brownback, who spent his time in Kansas trying to strip women of their basic personal and medical rights in the name of his phony version of Christianity, makes Trump’s intention clear. He’s appointing Brownback to push bigoted conservative Christian extremism around the world. The question is why he’s rolling out all of these demented initiatives today in such a flurry.
On some level, Donald Trump is helping to shore up his support with his own bigoted base, at a time when he’s in danger of offending his base by going to war against bigoted Attorney General Jeff Sessions. But Trump’s ongoing flurry of extremist nonsense today suggests something larger is going on behind the scenes, and he’s trying to preemptively create a distraction from it.
As we reported earlier today, two of Donald Trump’s most prominent online cheerleaders are now both expressing the fear that Trump is indeed trying to create a distraction from major impending news that will be bad for him (link). Meanwhile, mainstream Americans have taken to the streets to protest in favor of transgender rights today (link). News bombshells may yet drop before the night is over.
