The Times They Are A Changin’
“Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside
And it’s ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
– Bob Dylan, 1963.
Mr. Dylan wrote those words 55 years ago. They were pertinent then. They are pertinent now. The 100 Senators and 435 Representatives have constituencies that elected them to represent them in the Federal government. Their job is to do the right thing, listen to the voters (and too many non-voters).
We don’t trust them anymore because they do not do their jobs. They represent their own interests and contaminate each other in their bubble that is Washington, DC. The longer their tenure, the further from reality they get. We urge each other to call, write, and protest but it doesn’t seem to reach each and every one of them. Our elected officials continue to remain deaf, dumb and blind to the reality of life in the good old USA today.
They are congratulating themselves on approving a conservative Supreme Court Justice who they hope will deliver us from the evils of abortion. Because abortions have reached epidemic proportions?
They congratulate themselves on a brand new tax bills that will (studies show) hurt all but the more fortunate, few Americans. Why didn’t they just lower the corporate tax rate and leave the rest alone? They are the problem. They won’t stand up for their constituency because the bubble might burst. Accountants may have to be settled. Consequences, for selling out our well being to show camaraderie and allegiance to an insane president, will rattle their walls in November 2018. Vote them out.
Each day: Show kindness, be grateful, learn something new, be moved to tears and make a difference.
