Sarah Huckabee Sanders is having the worst day ever
Sean Spicer proved that there is no way to serve as Donald Trump’s Press Secretary without looking bad in the process. You have to repeat and amplify Trump’s endless stream of lies, while lecturing reporters who point out that you’re obviously lying. You have to sell those lies enthusiastically enough that Trump himself believes you mean it. There were ways in which Spicer was uniquely and offensively bad at the job in his own right. But we may be reaching the point where the argument can be made that Sarah Huckabee Sanders has become even worse at it.
Today we saw Sarah Huckabee Sanders mistakenly say “Obama” twice instead of “Trump” while she was reading from a prepared statement. That’s not supposed to be possible. It’s why it was written down. Did she write the wrong name to begin with? Did someone else write this and decide to prank her? Did Melania Trump plagiarize this? Or did Sarah simply try to ad lib the part concerning the name of her boss? This is something out of a rejected Seinfeld script.
As if that weren’t bad enough, Huckabee Sanders ended her press conference by claiming that Donald Trump (this time getting his name correct) is still having trouble making his supposed million dollar donation to Hurricane Harvey relief because the media hasn’t yet told him which charity to give it to. Come on, we all know there is no donation coming. This is the best lie she could come up with? Nevermind that there’s another potentially deadly hurricane off the coast.
We can debate whether Sean Spicer was even worse than this (on some days he certainly was). But the bottom line is that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is objectively terrible at this job in her own right. Let’s just give her a participation trophy and send her off to hide with Spicer in the bushes.
