Marco Rubio opens his mouth and accidentally blows up Donald Trump’s entire phony Hillary-Russia claim

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Various prominent Republicans including Senators John McCain, Bob Corker and Jeff Flake, and former President George W. Bush, have purposely poked holes in Donald Trump this past week in an attempt to take him down. And then there’s Marco Rubio, dazed and confused as ever, who accidentally did severe damage to Trump today just by opening his mouth without thinking.

Donald Trump and his remaining loyal Republicans launched a concerted effort this week to invent a series of phony new scandals around Hillary Clinton. In one instance they’ve taken the long-known facts about the Trump Russia dossier, which is that its research was originally funded by a Republican donor before later being funded by a Democratic donor, and spun that pedestrian knowledge into a nonexistent scandal. Trump and the GOP are frantically trying to sell the notion that because it was later funded by Democrats, the Trump scandals it uncovered are somehow not real. But then Rubio opened his mouth.

Now that Trump has tried to scandalize the funding of the dossier, it’s dredging up long dormant questions about the identity of the Republican donor who funded it to begin with. It’s known that the donor was trying to help a rival Republican presidential candidate at the time. When Marco Rubio appeared on CNN today, Wolf Blitzer asked him if his presidential campaign was behind the dossier (link). Rubio tried to prove he wasn’t behind it by insisting that if he’d uncovered what was in the dossier, he’d have used it to try to hurt Trump.

Marco Rubio thus admitted that if his campaign had funded the Trump Russia dossier, it would have been completely legitimate for him to use its findings against Donald Trump. In other words, it was standard opposition research. That means it was also completely legitimate for Trump’s Democratic rivals to later fund the dossier in the hope of using it against him as well. Rubio just accidentally blew up Trump’s entire phony premise about the dossier being illegitimate based on who funded it. Oops. Contribute to Palmer Report
