New James Comey revelation merely proves there was never any evidence against Hillary Clinton
In the immediate aftermath of the revelation that the Kremlin appears to have told the Donald Trump campaign it was willing to donate money to the Republican National Committee, we’re seeing Republican Party leaders hit the panic button (link). They’re suddenly trying to create a desperate distraction centered around the notion that former FBI Director James Comey was conspiring to exonerate Hillary Clinton all along. That’s not how things work, but the revelation is telling – because it in fact further exonerates Hillary.
If you’re an investigative body like the FBI and you’re probing a “big boss” type, you start by doing your own digging. Then you subpoena documents. Then you do more digging based on any clues you find in them. Then you interview the boss’s underlings. Then you do more digging based on what they’ve told you. By that time, you already know full well whether there’s any “there” there. If you’ve found real evidence that the big boss has committed crimes, you go into that interview using that evidence to try to get the boss to crack.
On the other hand, if you’re going into that final interview with no evidence of a crime, you already know your investigation is basically over. Sure, maybe you’ll get lucky and the boss will randomly brag about having robbed a bank during questioning. But short of hitting the lottery like that, you already know you’re about to drop the case and exonerate the big boss before that final interview even begins. So when James Comey began working on a potential letter of exoneration for Hillary Clinton just before she was interviewed, it was because the FBI had found no evidence she’d done anything wrong.
So this new revelation only serves to prove that after the FBI had spent more than a year digging into every millimeter of Hillary Clinton’s life, having interviewed every who had ever worked for her, having read and investigated all those emails she had turned over, there was still no evidence that she’d done anything wrong. That’s why Comey began writing the letter. By exposing this detail, the Republican Party has only served to make clear that the entire “email” scandal was nothing but a fishing expedition into imaginary crimes that never existed.
