Jeff Sessions and his lie detector debacle
They say that if you’re guilty and you want to convince people otherwise, you shouldn’t plead your innocence, but rather simply act like you’re innocent. It even helps to call for harsh punishment for whoever the culprit may be. The trouble for Jeff Sessions is that this strategy doesn’t work when you’ve already been proven guilty, and been caught lying about it on live national television. Hence his lie detector debacle.
Jeff Sessions now says he wants everyone on the National Security Council to take a lie detector test, according to an Axios report (link). His official reason is that he wants to hunt down the supposed “leakers” within the Donald Trump administration. This lie detector idea was probably leaked by Sessions himself, in an attempt at making himself look honest in general. But that’s just not going to fly.
This summer we all saw Jeff Sessions lie repeatedly while he was being questioned about his role in the Trump-Russia scandal during Senate hearings. His lies were right there airing live on cable news for all to see. Before that, Sessions was caught lying during his confirmation hearings for Attorney General. Then he submitted amended testimony in which he admitted to some, but not all, of his secret campaign meetings with the Russian government – meaning that he was caught lying again.
Yet now Jeff Sessions seems to think he can convince us all that he’s honest, simply by letting it be known that he wants others in the Trump administration to take a lie detector test. Instead, all he’s doing is unwittingly causing us all to recall the sheer number of times that he’s lied about his role in a treasonous election rigging scandal. The best thing Sessions could do at this point is lay low. His attempt at painting himself as the honest one is a debacle.
