Jeff Sessions is having the worst week ever

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

If you’re Attorney General Jeff Sessions, right now you’re wishing you’d never left the Senate to begin with – or perhaps wishing you could find a rock to hide under for awhile. Because you’re having the worst week ever, and it’s getting worse for you by the hour, and you’ve got no allies left, and there’s only one way things can go from here.

To recap the past several days: First the media reported that Jeff Sessions may have had yet another secret meeting with the Russian Ambassador during the campaign. Then came word that Donald Trump is so enraged at Sessions for having recused himself in the Trump-Russia investigation, Sessions ended up offering to resign. Then former FBI Director James Comey testified that he knew almost from the start that Sessions would have to imminently recuse himself from Trump-Russia, because he was just that compromised. And that was all just the preamble.

Then came confirmation that Sessions really did have that extra meeting with the Russian Ambassador, meaning that he lied under oath during his original confirmation hearings and again during the amended testimony he submitted. That’s two felonies. Now this evening Jeff Sessions is backing out of a public congressional hearing that had already been scheduled for Tuesday, sending his deputy instead, because he’s just that afraid of facing the cameras.

Instead, Jeff Sessions is now reduced to agreeing to testify before a different Senate committee, and insisting that he has unspecified classified information to share, as a way of begging for the hearings to be closed to the public (link). The trouble for Sessions is that he lost Trump as an ally when he recused himself, and he lost Senate allies when he lied to them under oath. By trying to put himself first in this mess, Sessions may end up finishing last – particularly once the Special Counsel gets ahold of him. Follow Palmer Report on Facebook and Twitter.
