When I say “impotent” I’m not referring to the blatantly sexual tweet that Donald Trump posted on Tuesday about a female U.S. Senator, though that tweet probably reveals Trump is impotent in that sense of the word too. Instead, I’m referring to a swing and miss that Trump took on Tuesday in his Russia scandal, which comically fell flat and reminded everyone involved that he has basically no remaining political muscle, if he ever had any to begin with.

Trump announced through his attorneys on Tuesday that no additional White House advisers will be allowed to interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. First of all, it’s too late for this to matter. Mueller already got more than what he needed from Hope Hicks and Don McGahn, and as per usual, Trump is hesitantly waiting and then overreacting after it’s too late for him. Moreover, Trump can’t do that.

Imagine you’re the manager of a McDonald’s that’s been busted for money laundering. After the police begin interviewing your employees, and it starts to become clear that you’re the money launderer, you suddenly prohibit the rest of your employees from speaking with the police. Not only is it illegal for you to try to block them, you’re sending a clear sign to the police that you are indeed guilty. Your employees are free to keep talking to the police about you if they want, and in fact those employees risk violating the law if they refuse to testify about what they’ve witnessed.

In other words, Robert Mueller will continue interviewing various Donald Trump advisers as he pleases. If some of them make the mistake of refusing to cooperate with him out of blind loyalty to Trump, they’ll end up getting arrested by Mueller, and then they’ll have to cut formal plea deals against Trump. This was an impotent swing and miss by Trump, a man who is clearly impotent in general.
