What happens when a bully goes on an angry threatening tirade, and it backfires so badly that his intended targets ramp up their defiance of him in response, even as his own friends publicly tell him to back off? In the case of Donald Trump, who stages a meltdown anytime anything doesn’t go his way, the answer is his most berserk meltdown to date.

Trump faced one of his most infuriating and humiliating days on Sunday. He demanded that NFL players stop kneeling during the National Anthem. They responded by doing it in much larger numbers than ever before. He demanded that NFL owners fire or suspend the players. The owners responded by standing arm in arm with their players on the sideline during the anthem. By the time it was all over, Sunday Night Football announcer Cris Collinsworth called on Trump to apologize for having called an NFL player a “son of a bitch” to begin with.

If Trump’s goal was to play the bully and assert his will, the entire series of events only served to make him look weak – so much so that even he’ll figure it out before long. By Sunday afternoon he was so spun around that he ended up tweeting how great it was that the players were locked arm in arm, seemingly in denial over the fact that they were standing in solidarity against him. But that denial will fade by morning. He’ll have to admit that he got shown up today, both by the black athletes he was attacking, and by the white team owners he’s long tried to buddy up to. This was a smackdown.

We’re about to see Donald Trump’s most berserk meltdown yet. Will he attack the players? Collinsworth? His friend, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who publicly told him off? Maybe he’ll try to distract from his NFL humiliation by choosing a new target instead. But now that he’s reduced to picking fights with athletes who are more popular than he is, what’s even left in the tank? We’re about to find out.
