Donald Trump’s wipeout season is upon us
If you’re a sports fan, at some point in your life you’ve rooted for a team that was saddled by a fundamentally incompetent head coach who was incapable of improving. You knew the team wasn’t going to get any better until that coach was fired. So did every other fan. But the decision ultimately rested with the powers-that-be, and all you could do was keep pressuring them while waiting for the inevitable wipeout season. The hard part is living through the wipeout season.
What usually gets rid of that incompetent coach isn’t yet another subtly subpar season, where there are just enough excuses to cover for the failures, and just enough denial to put off the inevitable. What finishes off the incompetent coach is the season where it all finally goes horrifically wrong: the calamitous losses and errors pile up to reach a breaking point. And that’s what we’re now quickly heading into in the Donald Trump era.
Trump has turned out to be even worse at this “president” thing than even his most cynical detractors had predicted. Everyone involved, including the Republican Congress with their impeachment power, and the VP and cabinet with their 25th Amendment power, knows it. But none of them want to pull the lever unless they absolutely have to. They’ve been trying to put off the inevitable by floating one excuse after another. First, he was just new at it. Then he was just unconventional. Then he became the guy whose deteriorating behavior they publicly reprimanded, as yet another way of trying to buy themselves time. But even that doesn’t fly anymore. Not after these past two weeks.
So now we head into the period in which those with the power to oust Donald Trump are lying low, hoping we forget that they even exist, let alone that they have the power to end this farce. But Donald Trump just humiliated America so thoroughly on the world stage that everyone knows which way this is headed next. Trump will go into a total tailspin now; his behavior will deteriorate rapidly by the day until his own party finally concludes it has to pull the lever on him to avoid getting wiped out itself.
Welcome to the wipeout season. The good news is that at this point, each time Donald Trump screws up that much more, each time he embarrasses himself and the nation that much further, the closer to the end of this we get. He has to bottom out before we can get out from under him. If you’re a regular reader, feel free to support Palmer Report
