Now we know how to destroy Jeff Sessions
Attorney General Jeff Sessions marched into public Senate hearings today facing more pressure than he ever has in his life, being equally in danger of going down in scandal and being fired. He tried to split the difference. But in the process, Sessions unwittingly revealed something far more vulnerable about himself – and it’s something that everyone involved can use to destroy him.
We’ve all encountered plenty of people whose disarmingly charming personality is very much real; their external affability is truly who they are underneath. And then there’s Jeff Sessions, whose long career in politics has revealed him to be a vicious mean-spirited animal, and whose external charm is a carefully calculated fraud. He uses it to get people to let their guard down, to gain sympathy, to play the victim, to paint himself as being too sweet to ever do any harm. And that phony external demeanor has never cracked – until now.
During the course of questioning today, Sessions completely lost his composure on multiple occasions. And in both instances it caused him to slip up and admit things he shouldn’t have. After Senator Ron Wyden got under his skin, Sessions angrily insulted the U.S. intel community in a manner which will probably have them gunning for him with leaks before sunrise (link). And then when Senator Kamala Harris got under his skin, Sessions admitted that his Russia meetings were indeed part of the campaign (link.
Jeff Sessions didn’t quite crack under the pressure today, but he came close. And it’s now clear that when Sessions becomes more ruffled and flustered, not only is his viciously ugly true personality on display for all to see, he also ends up saying things that harm himself. So for those Democrats who want to take Sessions down, and take Donald Trump down in the process, now we know how to do it: keep needling Sessions and getting under his skin until he really does crack and admits things about the Russia scandal that will destroy them both.
