Donald Trump is “bracing for fallout” from what comes next
Donald Trump’s behavior continues to grow more erratic and dysfunctional by the day. He’s in a downward spiral that’s becoming progressively more obvious as his Russia scandal and other calamities continue to close in on him. Now a new report offers some insight into what’s going behind the scenes in Trump’s world, and why he’s melting down: he knows what’s coming next.
That’s the word from the latest New York Times article, which says that Trump and his people are “bracing for fallout from the investigations into Mr. Manafort and Mr. Flynn.” (link). That’s because both of them will likely end up indicted soon, which – though not legally an indicator of their guilt – will serve as tangible evidence in the court of public opinion that Trump and his campaign were indeed a criminal operation. Trump’s detractors have been saying it from day one, and now the American middle will finally get to see what they’ve been talking about all this time.
Meanwhile, Trump and his lawyers are embarking on a legal strategy that can be viewed as either a Hail Mary or a forfeit. They’re (supposedly) giving Special Counsel Robert Mueller everything he wants in terms of evidence and cooperation, in order to allow Mueller to work more quickly. Why? Trump is now banking on the delusional notion that Mueller is somehow going to magically clear him of any wrongdoing, even before the investigation is over.
What Donald Trump doesn’t get is that Robert Mueller is pursuing criminal charges against people like Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn specifically to pressure them into flipping on Trump. There’s no other endgame here. These people may have broken laws, but they’re not the real target. Mueller didn’t take this job, and put his reputation on the line, just to put a couple of political hacks in prison. He’s targeting Trump himself.
