Donald Trump tries to bluff with nothing but a pair of twos
Donald Trump has just reminded us that he has no idea how to negotiate, deal, or even bluff – and he never has. He spent his entire business career isolating and conning suckers into taking deals that were too good to be true, only to turn around and defraud them of their money. But when it comes to dealing with politicians, Trump has had a difficult time trying to figure out whom he should sucker. Moreover, now that his back is against the wall and he has no choice but to deal, it turns out he’s absolutely terrible at it.
Trump has been holding nothing but a pair of twos when it comes to DACA, because he dealt himself a bad hand to begin with by taking the indefensibly wrong side of an easy issue. So he decided to try to sucker Congress into solving it for him. He created a six month window for his own party to legislatively clean up his DACA mess. But the GOP doesn’t want to have to make immigration its issue. So Congress is tempted to call his bluff and just sit back, let the six months count down, and let Trump sweat it out as public pressure swings back around in his direction.
Trump tried a weak bluff on a weak hand, and then he went and made it far worse for himself tonight: he flat out admitted he’s bluffing. The genius went and tweeted this: “Congress now has 6 months to legalize DACA (something the Obama Administration was unable to do). If they can’t, I will revisit this issue!”
That’s right, he just admitted he’s bluffing. Whether he realizes it or not, he just admitted to Congress that it doesn’t have to sweat it over the next six months, because the heat will just come back to him anyway. This guy is the worst negotiator of all time. No wonder he has a legislative record of zero.
