Even Ben Carson thinks Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump should continue

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Dr. Ben Carson’s bid for the presidency failed for a number of reasons. He was too lacking in even the most basic of common sense. He was too far removed from reality. He didn’t seem to understand what planet he was on. And in the time since Carson has joined Donald Trump’s cabinet, he’s proven himself as clueless and ignorant as ever. But at this point it’s entirely possible that Carson is less fully removed from reality than Trump is.

This is based on Ben Carson’s assertion today that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump should be allowed to continue. Carson’s logic: “I would give him the chance to see if he could do that because if there’s nothing there – he’s not gonna find anything anyway.” (link). That’s a factually incorrect position, as the investigation has already turned up plenty, and Mueller is going to find plenty more. But it’s an inherently reasonable public position for Carson to take, and it’s the position which Trump himself should have taken.

Imagine if Donald Trump had simply said “I’ve done nothing wrong with regard to Russia, and I welcome the investigation because I know it’ll end up proving I’ve done nothing wrong.” Even if Trump is guilty on Russia, his best bet still would have been to publicly welcome the investigation, while perhaps trying to derail it in subtle ways. Instead, by preemptively firing everyone who was in a position to uncover his wrongdoing, Trump branded himself as guilty right out of the gate, and provided additional motivation for everyone involved to keep digging.

This raises the question of whether Ben Carson, despite coming off as certifiably nuts, might have somehow made a less damaging president than Donald Trump. It’s not that any reasonable person’s view of Carson has softened. It’s that Trump has turned out to be even more whacked out than even his biggest skeptics had feared. At this point even wacky Ben Carson is making more sense.
