With weird new attack on media, Donald Trump’s latest attempt at distracting from Russia goes awry
Donald Trump likely made history today by being the first Oval Office occupant to ever issue a demented attack on the media, then delete it and replace it with an even more comprehensive attack on the media. And in the process, Trump revealed just how thoroughly and swiftly he’s melting down under the pressure of the job, as the media continues to move in for the kill on his failing administration – and how desperate he is to distract from his Russia scandal.
Trump has, up to now, only attacked one major media outlet by name at any given time. Sometimes it’s CNN, sometimes it’s the New York Times, but he’s typically tried isolation tactics. That changed today at 4:32pm eastern time, when he was supposed to be preparing to head out for yet another weekend getaway to his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, a desperate Trump decided to begin attacking multiple news outlets at once, tweeting “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK!”
He then deleted the tweet, seemingly too clueless to understand that people can still see it, leading some to conclude he (or his handlers) had thought better of declaring that multiple major media outlets were the enemy of the American people. But sixteen minutes later, Trump replaced it with a tweet which attacked even more media outlets by name: “The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!” This time he also decided to capitalize the word “People” for no apparent reason.
Actually, there is a reason for all of the above. As Donald Trump’s Russia scandal quickly closes in on him and his administration, with Michael Flynn having resigned over it, and four of his advisors now caught by the intel community having colluded with Russian intel agents during the election, Trump is going down and he knows it. He’s just trying to take the media down with him, or at least create a distraction. But at this point the story on Donald Trump continues to be this: Russia, Russia, Russia.
