We just got our report card – and we passed with flying colors
I recently wrote that the February 13th special election to replace George Santos was going to serve as our report card. It’s an evenly matched district in terms of voting demographics. So whichever party won, that was going to tell us which party currently has the advantage heading into November. Polls don’t vote. Scary media narratives don’t vote. People do. And yesterday they voted.
Democratic candidate Tom Suozzi won the special election, and it didn’t even come down to the wire. This is the kind of evenly matched toss-up district where any win is a good win. But Suozzi won with votes to spare. If you donated to Suozzi or volunteered for him, or even if you simply retweeted his fundraising links, you helped make this victory happen. Crucially, you put in enough work to make sure that it didn’t come down to chance. This wasn’t just a win, it was a statement win.
Tuesday’s special election didn’t get nearly the national media attention that it should have over the past month. Now that the Democrats have won it, we’ll see if the media tries to downplay the win so it can get back to its current nonsensical “Biden in trouble” ratings narrative.
But there’s no ignoring the fact that this win is major good news for Biden and the Democrats. New York’s 3rd District is so evenly matched between the two parties in terms of voting demographics, it made for an ideal litmus test of where both parties stand. If Biden and the Democrats were somehow in trouble in 2024, the Democratic candidate wouldn’t have won this election. We still have to focus more strongly than ever on winning in November, but we just got great news about what kind of shape we’re in.
