Senate Intel Committee forcing Michael Flynn to testify over Donald Trump’s Russia scandal
Yesterday we pointed out Michael Flynn’s surprising silence over the Donald Trump Russia scandal since his resignation last week. Today it turns out his silence will be broken whether he wants it to be or not, as the Senate Intelligence Committee will be forcing Flynn to testify about the scandal.
That’s the word today from Senator Susan Collins, who sits on the Senate Intel Committee and says she wants Michael Flynn to testify before the committee. This is notable because she’s a Republican. The six Democrats and one Independent on the committee already want the Trump-Russia investigation to be pursued as vigorously as possible. The addition of Collins to their side on any given issue gives them eight votes out fifteen, meaning they get their way on that issue.
If Flynn were to ignore a subpoena to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he would be found in contempt of Congress and would end up in front of judge over it, as this Slate article spelled out awhile back. So in other words, the committee can force Flynn to testify. And based on the public position that Senator Collins has taken today in a radio interview which was documented by Politico, it’s clear that Flynn will be forced to do so. He’ll be under oath, and we may finally get answers on Trump’s deepening Russian connections. But Collins took things even further.
During that same interview, Susan Collins said that she’ll subpoena Donald Trump’s tax returns “if it’s necessary to get the answers” when it comes to the Trump-Russia scandal. And again, if Collins decides to go through with seeking the tax returns, the Senate Intel Committee will have enough votes to make it happen. She alone can box out the other seven Republicans on the committee from having any say on these matters, simply by siding with the Democrats. But she’s already clearly set on making Flynn testify.
