Despite having held a high level position at the Department of Justice, Sally Yates was largely unknown as a public figure until she found herself randomly caught in the middle of two of Donald Trump’s most controversial scandals. She did the right thing in both instances, which prompted Trump to fire her. She hadn’t been heard from since, until she resurfaced at a public event this week – and she received a hero’s welcome for it.

Sally Yates, the now-former acting Attorney General, attended an event at the Carter Presidential Library this week in Atlanta, Georgia alongside her former boss Eric Holder. Although she was merely an audience member at the event, when she entered the room she was greeted with a standing ovation. Crowd members suggested that she and Holder run on a ticket together for President in 2020.

Yates became an instant hero to mainstream Americans when she refused to defend Donald Trump’s racist Muslim ban after a federal judge ruled that it was unconstitutional. Trump fired her on the spot. It was then later revealed that just four days beforehand, Yates had tried to warn Trump that National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was a security risk due to his ties to the Russian government — suggesting Trump had fired her partly to try to put a lid on his Russian scandal.

Flynn later resigned in disgrace over the Russia scandal, and a federal Appeals Court struck down Trump’s Muslim ban, vindicating Sally Yates on both matters. And now she’s receiving a hero’s welcome whenever she shows her face in public. It’s just a matter of what she wants to do next.
