The Arizona GOP is already trying to rig the next one

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

If 2021 were the sedition Olympics, Arizona Republicans would surely be medal contenders. Unable to move on from a massive defeat in the 2020 election cycle, the Arizona GOP is working hard to ensure it doesn’t happen again in 2024 by stripping voters of their rights one bill at a time.

House Bill 2720, the newest piece of election legislation, proposed by Arizona’s Ways and Means Committee, is the most extreme yet giving lawmakers the authority to override the Secretary of State’s certification of its electoral votes any time before the presidential inauguration by the majority vote. If passed, the bill would also prevent judges from throwing out baseless court cases without evidence.

Representative Shawnna Bolick, seditionist extraordinaire, who chairs the Arizona Ways and Means Committee, introduced HB2720 in January. Bolick’s goal is to rewrite Arizona’s election laws in the image of the GOP’s new fringe. I’m sure her husband, Clint Bolick, Associate Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, is behind her every step of the way.

This act of desperation comes on the heels of a slew of legislation designed to suppress voting and silence voices of dissent like Cindy McCain and Jeff Flake.
Since January, Arizona Republicans have introduced several bills attacking voters’ rights. From making mail-in voting more difficult to scrubbing voting lists, Arizona’s GOP has made it their goal to win 2024 at any cost. Gee, doesn’t that sound familiar?

Bolick and her band of authoritarian lawmakers are another reminder that we’re in the fight of our lives to defend the future of our democracy.
