President Biden shuts down yet another one of Trump’s debacles
President Biden is taking heat for shutting down Mike Pompeo’s “inquiry” into the origins of the COVID-19 virus. Critics of the Pompeo inquiry claim it was biased from the outset, cherry-picking evidence with the goal of deflecting blame for the administration’s botched pandemic response onto China instead.
Even in their own words, “sources involved in the Trump-era inquiry rejected criticisms over the quality of their work and told CNN their objective had been to examine scientific research and information from the US intelligence community which backed the lab leak theory and shone more light on how it could have emerged in the lab.”
This is a textbook cherry-picking operation and not a scientific inquiry. The conclusion they were seeking is stated right there in the hypothesis. Pompeo’s goons are so completely biased that they can’t see this glaring flaw in their methodology.
True scientific inquiry looks at ALL research and information, not just that which supports the theory under examination. It also seeks specific knowledge, not just whether it “could have emerged in the lab,” but also some measure of the likelihood that it “actually did.”
President Biden was right to shut down Pompeo’s farcical propaganda operation. If scientists are ever to understand the true origins of this disease, we must set aside politically motivated CYA operations and rely instead on the tried-and-true scientific method.
We may yet find that the virus escaped from a lab, but we will never prove or disprove such a thing by cutting corners in the investigation and goose-stepping it toward a predetermined conclusion. And we will never get China to correct their behavior unless we can deliver unimpeachable evidence to the world that they had a hand in its spread.
Pompeo wasn’t trying to correct China’s behavior or prevent future outbreaks. He was trying to convince xenophobes to re-elect Individual-1.
