When a group of feisty Democrats from the state of Texas fled to stop controversial voting legislation from being passed, they were rightly labeled “bold” and “heroic,” which they are.

And now this group is doing something else. They have filed a lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The courageous group is claiming that Abbott and two other GOP members violated their civil rights. Governor Abbott had called for the arrest of the Democrats after they fled the state.

The lawsuit, filed by 22 of these Democrats, alleges that there were retaliatory attacks on them and racial discrimination in addition to coercion.

In addition to Governor Abbott, two other names were included in the lawsuit. Those are House Speaker Dade Phelan and State Rep. James White.

The lawsuit also claims that the Texas Democrats have been “deprived of liberty for substantial periods, suffered much anxiety and distress over separation from their families and much discomfort and embarrassment.”

I am glad the Democrats have done this. Governor Abbott did indeed threaten them publicly, as we all heard. The Governor even said that these patriots would be arrested as soon as they set foot on Texas soil.

Most of the Democrats who fled and are involved in this lawsuit are still at the Capitol. We will, I am sure, be hearing quite a bit more about this in the upcoming weeks.
