The projections said that Texas would turn blue eventually, based on long term demographic and societal trends. it looks like Joe Biden’s broad popularity, and Donald Trump’s ongoing collapse in popularity, are pushing Texas in that direction a bit sooner than we all might have expected.

For awhile now, we’ve seen polls that showed Biden and Trump were essentially tied in Texas, with one or the other ahead by a point or two. We’ve been waiting to see if this was a mere temporary artifact of anti-Trump backlash, or if the numbers in Texas really would keep trending in Biden’s direction.

Now the new Dallas Morning News – University of Texas poll has Joe Biden ahead of Donald Trump by an eyebrow-raising five points in Texas. Of course this is just one poll, and you have to look at the broader picture; for instance the latest CBS News poll has Trump ahead by one point in Texas.

But it’s becoming clear that in the 2020 presidential election, Texas is a swing state, up for grabs by either candidate. This in turns suggests that the U.S. Senate race in Texas could also be up for grabs, as Trump’s unpopularity is likely to have a down ballot effect. Beto O’Rourke reacted to the new Biden +5 poll by tweeting “We can do this.” He’s right. Joe Biden responded to the polls by tweeting “We’ve got work to do.” He’s also right.
