With all due respect, Adam Schiff, you’re wrong about Biden

With the media having gotten caught making up one fake story after another about this or that prominent Democrat supposedly privately wanting President Biden to drop out of the race, I’ve come to ignore such stories. But days after the media claimed that Adam Schiff had privately turned against Biden, Schiff has now publicly confirmed this afternoon that he wants Biden to drop out. Schiff is wrong.

This is an article I didn’t want to have to write. I don’t know Adam Schiff personally. But in political terms, he and I go way back. I used to live in Schiff’s district. I took pride when pulling out of the grocery store and seeing his name on a sign across the street (some of you know the sign I’m talking about). I cheered Schiff on as he fearlessly worked to expose Trump’s scandals. And while I didn’t take sides in the recent Senate primary race, I was more than pleased to learn that Schiff is going to be the next Senator from my great state of California.

But now… what is Adam Schiff doing? He’s not going to somehow knock Biden out of the nomination by putting out this statement. All that Schiff is doing is hanging this around his own neck. If Biden wins, Schiff will look like an idiot for having tried to force him out of the race. If Biden loses, Schiff will look like a traitor who helped cost his own party the presidency. Either way, Schiff loses. It’s just a dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb move. And while Schiff will be a U.S. Senator from California for years if not decades to come, he’ll always have this hanging around his neck.

The only possible partial defense I can provide for Schiff is that maybe he got unwittingly backed into this. If he honestly believes that Biden is going to lose, and if he did privately say as much over the weekend to a donor who then leaked it to the media, then he would have been left with only two options: confirm it or deny it. And maybe he just didn’t want to lie to the public about how he expects the race to go.

But even in that scenario, it’s really not much of a defense. Schiff is getting torched on social media right now. He’s going to enter the Senate as something of a pariah among Democratic supporters. While Biden is pragmatic enough to let Schiff off the hook during Biden’s second term, the Democratic base might not be.

In any case, Adam Schiff is simply wrong about President Biden’s prospects of winning. The polling averages say that the race is roughly tied, and the Democrats have been outperforming the polling averages in every election since Roe v. Wade was overturned. The 538 model says Biden has a better chance of winning than Trump. Why on earth would Biden drop out?

All we can do for now is continue to strongly get behind President Biden, and wait for Adam Schiff to come around and do the same. In the meantime you can help Biden by donating to his 2024 campaign.
