Why it matters so much that Joe Biden has picked Kamala Harris as his running mate
Joe Biden just announced that Kamala Harris is his 2020 vice presidential running mate. This isn’t a surprise, considering she was widely considered the frontrunner for most of the selection process. Still, a whole lot of other names were publicly kicked around, leaving at least some doubt at the end as to what Biden was really going to do.
Now that it’s official, we should take a moment to talk about how much this pick matters, on a couple levels. For one thing, Joe Biden is making the most aggressive pick he can make here. Kamala Harris is highly qualified and politically savvy. It’s clear that whatever differences they might have had during the primary season, they’re more than willing to come together for the greater good.
It’s also a huge deal that Kamala Harris is a woman, and a person of color. The United States has never had a Vice President who fit either of those descriptions. If Joe Biden wins as expected, this will be a historic step forward in what has been an embarrassing lack of representation in government for centuries.
