Why is Donald Trump suddenly talking about Donald Trump Jr. going to prison?
Donald Trump is so prone to projection that when he says something absurd out of the blue, he’s often giving something away about what he thinks or knows is coming. So it’s notable, we guess, that Trump said this at last night’s rally: “Now they’re saying that my son, Donald Trump Jr. should go to jail. For what? He’s a good kid.” Wait, where did this even come from?
There is no reporting or indication that the DOJ is targeting Donald Trump Jr. as part of its January 6th related probe into Donald Trump. So what is Trump even talking about? The Manhattan District Attorney’s office was reportedly criminally investigating Trump and multiple members of his family for financial fraud, before ultimately punting on the case. Meanwhile the New York Attorney General has been moving forward with the related civil probe into the Trump Organization’s finances. Days ago, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump testified in that case. Donald Trump is set to testify soon.
And now, days after Donald Trump Jr. testified in that case, Donald Trump is suddenly talking about Donald Trump Jr. going to prison. It’s just weird. What is he getting at? Did Junior screw up and confess during his testimony? Given how unhinged he’s appeared in recent videos, that wouldn’t be shocking. Did Junior throw his dad under the bus? Is Trump now talking like this because he’s going to try to scapegoat Junior in return?
Of course Donald Trump is increasingly coming off as being at least partly senile in his public appearances of late. So it’s possible he’s just saying this because he’s totally confused about what’s even going on. But it sure is odd that, right after Donald Trump Jr. testified in the New York Attorney General case, Donald Trump is babbling about Trump Jr. going to prison. Stay tuned.
