Donald Trump’s defense team spent most of the day Thursday trying to convince the jury that a witness named Keith Davidson is a bad guy. And guess what? It sure looks like Davidson is a bad guy. The first witness in this trial, David Pecker, is also a bad guy. Michael Cohen, back when he was working for Trump years ago, was also a bad guy. There are so many bad guys in this trial, the adult film star and the playmate are the two witnesses with the most personal credibility.

But the point of this trial, really, is that these are the people Donald Trump conspired with to try to alter the outcome of the 2016 election in his favor. Trump worked with a fixer, a fake news magnate, and the kind of lawyer who sells his clients’ stories to tabloids, to try to achieve his goals.

Yet even though these people were all willing to work with Trump in shady fashion, they seemed horrified when it resulted in him winning the election. After Trump was named the winner, Davidson texted this to his National Enquirer contact: “What have we done?” And it didn’t take Cohen long to figure out that he’d made a mistake by elevating Trump.

The real upshot here is that even these shady characters who helped Trump during the 2016 election quickly became horrified at the prospect of him actually becoming President of the United States. Even they knew Trump was a dangerous psychopath. Trump can have his defense attorneys try to portray these witnesses as bad guys. But it’s clear that even they think Trump is the worst of them all.
