What Donald Trump’s target letter tells us about Mark Meadows and Rudy Giuliani
When Donald Trump announced today that he received a January 6th target letter from Jack Smith, it told us a few things. For instance it means Trump will likely be indicted within a few days. It also raised a number of questions. For instance, who else received target letters?
We don’t know the answer to this, because target letters are not public by default. Trump chose to go public with the fact that he received one. Others may have also received target letters on Sunday night and kept it quiet. That said, Rudy Giuliani just announced to the media that he did not receive a target letter. But this could mean two things.
It could be that Giuliani’s cooperation, including his proffer interview, has indeed been enough to save him from being indicted. It could also be that Jack Smith has simply decided to indict Donald Trump first in this, and then circle back and indict his lesser co-conspirators after the fact. We’re seeing this in the Espionage Act probe, where Jack Smith has already indicted Trump and Walt Nauta but just recently sent a target letter to another Mar-a-Lago employee.
What about Mark Meadows? Last month there were multiple major media reports that Meadows had testified against Trump to Jack Smith’s grand jury. One media outlet went further and reported that Meadows had cut a cooperation deal. Meadows’ attorney refuted the existence of such a deal, but didn’t deny that Meadows had testified. Now we wait to find out whether Meadows has indeed flipped, or if he’s getting indicted alongside Trump.
