What did Mitch McConnell just do to himself?

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Mitch McConnell has always been a human garbage can when it comes to immorality, dishonesty, and criminality. But he’s always been a savvy villain, politically capable, skilled at scoring wins even when he should be losing. But after what he just said, I’m suddenly left to wonder if he’s slipping, because this may be one of the strategically dumbest things I’ve ever heard him say.

Smart people all know that Mitch McConnell and his Republican Congress more or less only exist to steal money from the American middle class and redirect it to their wealthy donors. But dumb people, unknowledgeable people, and naive people always end up getting on board with this scam, because people like McConnell are good at spinning it. They push tax cuts for the wealthy by flat out lying, claiming that they’re tax cuts for the middle class – and the dummies out there buy it.

So why on earth did McConnell just shatter the illusion by publicly admitting that he and the GOP plan to target Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, all by name, just three weeks before the midterm elections? He just told everyone who cares about these programs to go vote Democrat – and he’s not been the kind of guy to slip up like this.

It’s possible that Mitch McConnell is trying to play four dimensional chess here. If he expects the Democrats to win the House, perhaps he plans to spend the next two years blaming the Democrats for Trump’s exploding deficit. But it doesn’t really make logical sense, does it? Is Mitch a step ahead of us here in a way that we can’t see, or did he truly just stick his foot in his mouth during the height of election season?
