Melania Trump issues weird statement after Stormy Daniels interview airs
Melania Trump has been making a point of not so subtly expressing her displeasure with her husband Donald Trump in the weeks since his affair with Stormy Daniels became a public matter. Last night Daniels gave an interview on 60 Minutes which brought the affair even more squarely into the center of public attention. Now Melania has released a statement through her spokesperson, and, well, it’s of a bit weird one.
Stephanie Grisham is the White House Director of Communications for Melania Trump, which means she officially speaks on Melania’s behalf, and would not speak on a matter like this without Melania’s approval. So when she posted a tweet last night about the Daniels interview and scandal, it was a de facto statement released by Melania herself. Here’s what Grisham tweeted: “While I know the media is enjoying speculation & salacious gossip, Id like to remind people there’s a minor child who’s name should be kept out of news stories when at all possible.”
It’s a bit odd, though perhaps not surprising, to see the affair being categorized as mere “gossip” when Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen went so far as to pay Daniels $130,000 to try to keep her quiet. You don’t pay six-figure hush money over gossip. But the really weird part here is the reference to Barron Trump. We fully agree that he should be left out of this to whatever extent possible; he’s an innocent eleven year old kid. But Melania and Grisham just finished using Barron as an excuse for why Melania is suddenly spending a week away from Donald.
Melania Trump and the White House are officially hiding behind eleven year old Barron, even as Melania does things like making a point of departing the White House separately from Donald in order to make sure everyone knows she’s upset with him, even as Melania is insisting that the media not even so much as mention Barron’s name. We agree that the kid is the real victim here – but this rationale doesn’t even make sense.
