Donald Trump suffered a bodyblow in Kentucky tonight when Republican Governor Matt Bevin lost his reelection bid in a deeply red state, in spite of โ€“ or perhaps because of โ€“ Trump’s emphatic last minute effort at aligning himself with Bevin. Now things have gotten even worse for Trump, because Virginia just stepped up to the plate.

Over the weekend, Donald Trump tweeted that things are great in Virginia, but they’ll go downhill if the Democrats take control in the 2019 election. Trump didn’t appear to understand that the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the other state officials are already all Democrats, and the election was merely to decide the state legislature.

In any case, the “purple” state of Virginia saw its entire legislature flip from Republican to Democrat tonight, with the AP having just called it for the Virginia House and the Virginia Senate. This means Virginia is now, by definition, a blue state. There are plenty of factors that go into these things. But when you look at the Virginia flip within the context of the Kentucky upset, you see a clear pattern that Trump’s toxic unpopularity is costing the Republican Party elections nationwide.

Donald Trump is historically unpopular, and the only poll numbers that are going up for him are pro-impeachment poll numbers. Now is not the time for the Resistance to get complacent โ€“ but it’s clear that by every definition, Trump is in freefall.
